The pressure is on to get ready: students must meet deadlines, work to a tight budget and organise their team all whilst keeping their accounts in order. Innovation, creative flair, strict time management and good business sense will see the winners through!
We all stay together in one big room for the whole day but students work in teams on their own individual projects. However, it soon becomes clear that there are many advantages in liaising and trading with other competing teams, swapping resources or information. So in general the day is rich with communication and a fair bit of noise results so don’t book a room next to an exam!
After some icebreakers to outline a few essential tips for success, the main activity begins. We stagger the input and the task builds getting increasingly complex and challenging.
The day concludes with a competitive grande finale of presentations with music, drama, colourful costumes, powerful speeches, original ideas and all round entertainment.
Good time management demands more than just one skill. To complete a project well and meet a deadline, you first need to break it down and set yourself smaller goals. So whilst firing up your imagination and initiative to think of all the amazing things you could possibly do, you need to balance that with a sense of the limitations that will affect what is achievable within the time. Then you need to be able to pace yourself, keeping an overview of the whole project in mind so you can monitor your progress.
So to help students to gain a deeper understanding and conscious awareness of all this, we’ve cunningly devised a complex task which requires both creativity and advanced organisation. Faced with multiple tasks within a task, teams need to focus on strategy. They must assess the strengths they have amongst them, identify individual roles and delegate. The experience is one of collaborative responsibility and shows that independent learning certainly doesn’t mean just working on your own.
